How Do We Choose the Wedding Dresses That Make It Onto Our Rails?
Have you ever wondered how a wedding dress actually makes it onto the rails of a bridal boutique?
You might imagine us wandering around beautiful showrooms, drinking fizz and pointing at all the pretty dresses we love.
And yes… there is a little bit of that!

But after more than 20 years of buying wedding dresses, I can tell you that choosing a new collection is probably one of the hardest — and most important — parts of running Romsey Bridal.
Because we’re not buying dresses for ourselves.
We’re buying them for you.
It starts with our brides
Whenever Amy and I look at a new collection, one of the first things we ask is:
“Which of our brides is going to wear this?”
We think about the brides we’ve met over the previous months. The dresses they’ve loved, the ones they’ve rejected, the shapes we’ve wished we’d had, and those moments when we’ve thought, “If only we had something like…”
Every appointment teaches us something.
Sometimes it tells us we need more lace. Sometimes it’s a particular neckline, shape or fabric. Sometimes we realise we’re missing something beautifully simple and understated. And occasionally we realise that our rails have become a little too safe and it’s time to introduce something that pushes us — and our brides — slightly outside our comfort zone.
We don’t want hundreds of dresses
This might surprise you.
Our aim isn’t to cram as many wedding dresses as possible into the boutique.
In fact, it’s quite the opposite.
We deliberately keep our collection carefully curated because we believe bridal shopping can become overwhelming very quickly. Twenty versions of almost the same dress don’t necessarily give you more choice — sometimes they simply make finding the one harder.
We would rather have a beautifully considered collection where every dress has a reason for being there.
That means when we’re buying, every gown has to earn its place.

The questions we ask
Of course, we have to fall a little bit in love with a dress ourselves, but that’s only the beginning.
We also look at its shape, fabric, construction and fit. We think about what sizes we already have represented on our rails and whether the dress brings something genuinely different to the collection.
We consider price too.
We want our brides to have choice at different price points, but we also want every gown to feel special and offer something worthy of its price tag.
Then comes the very important question:
Do we already have something too similar?
It’s incredibly easy when buying to be drawn repeatedly towards the same type of dress. Before you know it, you have a rail full of beautiful gowns that all appeal to exactly the same bride!
So sometimes the dress we personally adore isn’t actually the dress the boutique needs.
And sometimes the dress we’re slightly nervous about buying is exactly the one we should buy.
Sometimes we take a chance
This is something we’ve been challenging ourselves to do a little more recently.
When you run a business, it’s very easy to buy what feels safe. You know certain styles sell, so naturally you’re tempted to buy more of them.
But bridal fashion moves on, and so do brides.
Sometimes we need to bring in a dress that’s more fashion-forward, more unusual or simply very different from anything else we have.
Will every one of those dresses become a bestseller?
Probably not.
But if we only ever buy what we’ve sold before, how do we discover what our brides might fall in love with next?
And yes, there is a spreadsheet!
Sadly, buying beautiful wedding dresses isn’t entirely glamorous.
Behind the scenes there are spreadsheets, budgets, sizes, colours, delivery dates, minimum orders and lots of conversations that usually begin with:
“Do we really need another fitted dress?”
or…
“I know it’s beautiful, but what does it give us that we don’t already have?”
Every dress is an investment for a small independent boutique, so we have to balance our hearts with our heads.
Although occasionally a dress appears and both of us simply say:
“We HAVE to have that.”
Those are usually the fun ones.
Then we wait…
Once the decisions are made and the orders are placed, we wait.
And wait.
Until eventually a rather large box arrives at the boutique.
Opening new dress deliveries genuinely never gets old. We steam them, fuss over them, try to remember why we chose them — and usually immediately start imagining which of our upcoming brides might love them.
Then they’re photographed, added to our collection and finally take their place on the rails ready for their first appointment.
And that’s when the real test begins.
Because ultimately, you decide whether we got it right.
Our collection is always evolving
Romsey Bridal has never been about having the biggest collection.
It’s about having the right collection.
Beautiful dresses, different silhouettes, thoughtful price points and enough variety for you to explore your style without feeling overwhelmed.
And as our brides change, our rails will continue to change with them.
So next time you’re standing in the boutique browsing the dresses, just know that every single one has been debated, considered, compared and chosen with a future Romsey Bridal bride in mind.
And one of them might just have been chosen for you.
Pssst… want a little secret?
All of this feels particularly relevant at the moment because behind the scenes, Amy and I have been doing rather a lot of thinking, planning and buying for the next chapter of Romsey Bridal.
We’ve been looking very carefully at what our collection already does brilliantly — but, perhaps more importantly, where we think it could be even better.
We’re introducing some gorgeous new gowns, taking a few more risks with our buying and making room for styles that feel a little different, a little more fashion-led and very exciting.
And there may be something else we’re working on too… 👀
We’re not quite ready to tell you everything yet.
But let’s just say that 2027 at Romsey Bridal is shaping up to look rather beautiful.
Watch this space… 🤍
